Last Updated:    November 27, 2009

Year Reported aboard USS Fort Snelling:    1970

What Years did you serve in LSD-30 (ie 1954-1959):    1970 - 1972

Branch of Service:    US Navy

Residing In:    Trappe, PA USA

Attending Reunion:    Yes

Occupation:    Displaced Logistics Engineer/Full Time Handyman

Children:    (1) from my first Marriage Boy Allen Wayne born 1970
and (1) girl from my present marriage Jaclyn Ann born 25 July 1991.

Birthday:    August 12, 1949

Comments:    I got out of 4 years Active Duty and went to Penn State University on the GI Bill where I majored in Vocational Industrial Education to teach Drafting. Could not find a job teaching so I was working for an Engineering firm who sent me to Temple to become a Logistics Engineer. I worked for RCA, GE and Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster, PA until they closed the base. I then became a full-time self-employed Handyman.

Military Service:    During my active duty was stationed aboard the USS Cambria APA36 until we decomissioned it, transfered to the USS Fort Snelling. While there transfered to Fleet Intelligence Center Atlantic. Got Volunteered to drive an Admiral from CINCLANTFLT. Made 3rd class petty officer (Draftsman), transfered to SACLANT (NATO STAFF) where I finished out my 4 years. I joined FIRSTEURLANT 0693 (Intelligence Unit) out of Willow Grove, PA where I retired in 1991 as a DM2.

USS Fort Snelling LSD-30 Story:    Reported aboard at Portsmith Naval Shipyard where a week later we went into drydock to get cleaned up. and overhauled. I reported aboard as a FN, BT status, became a Corpsman Striker working for Chief Jeffers, Mobily, and Charles Church (All Corpsman), but sent mess cooking for life. I stayed in the Corpsman spaces and my general quarters duty was in the Sickbay area. It was great drinking coffee while the Marines were off playing war 2am in the morning. The only thing good about mess cooking was we had liberty everynight when in port overseas. Nobody else on the ship could say that. Finished my Corpsman third class courses but could not get school. Commanding Officer of the ship, sat me down and talked to me about why I hated the NAVY so much. I told him, I joined the Navy to be a Draftsman, but there were no openings so I did the next best thing and became a corpsman striker. Problem was no school since my test scores were not high enough. I had graduated from a drafting school after high school, so the Captain told me to put in for a ship on the east coast to strike for Draftsman and he would approve it. We headed off to the Med where while in Naples, I got orders for Naval Intelligence Center, Atlantic. (Shore Duty). The rest is History.
